Community Based Forest Management

In the Burhyini Community Forest (BCF), Strong Roots is developing a community-based conservation model that will educate and empower local communities to apply scientifically-grounded conservation strategies alongside traditional knowledge and practices. The ultimate goal is to pilot a viable model for Community Forest management applicable throughout DRC. In addition, we worked closely with the traditional chief to establish a new local law that bans the hunting of Great Apes, conducted the first socio-economic study in the region, trained 3 teams of ex-poachers to monitor gorilla populations, and lead a participatory mapping exercise to delineate the boundaries of the community forest.
